Yet again, I decided to make a change in my life. This time, it’s a health and fitness change. For about the past year and a half, I’ve been a fairly regular gym goer. However, I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted and was in fact continuing to gain weight. I decided to take a hard look at my lifestyle and what needed to be changed. Something obviously wasn’t working. I had gained significant weight since graduating college – some weight gain wasn’t surprising, I wasn’t hiking up hills with a backpack every day anymore. The major difference was that my diet hadn’t changed with that part of my lifestyle.

So I decided it was time to make a change. There are many aspects of my life that have been negatively impacted by my weight problem, and I recognized the need to do something about it. I could see the benefits of making these lifestyle changes With that, I decided to join Weight Watchers which I currently have a love/hate relationship. It is definitely an adjustment. I’m fascinated by seeing how many points foods and restaurant meals are. I’m flabbergasted by how many points the foods I eat are. I still don’t know the difference between weekly and daily points.

Before, I tried smaller changes such as cutting out pop which didn’t stick. But so far, this new mindset – that I need to make a change – seems to be helping me more stick with it. I’m not really one for accountability groups or meetings, but it doesn’t hurt to have someone who has your back. Other than my Coca Cola, I’m finding that I’m not really missing much food-wise, not excluding the occasional craving. Halo Top Chocolate Ice Cream is excellent and fulfills my need for chocolate AND ice cream while only taking 2 of my Weight Watchers points, making it an excellent snack.

I also decided to reevaluate how my fitness was working. For whatever reason, I have a harder time working out in the summer, so this summer I haven’t had much motivation to work out. Recently, I tried hot yoga which I enjoyed. I think I’m going to try and make yoga in general a weekly occurrence. I also really enjoy lifting, but unfortunately since I stopped lifting for a while, I’m kind of back where I started. But just getting back in the gym is a good thing, and it is a start. I know one of the most important things is to keep mixing up my workout so I don’t get bored. And truthfully, I do enjoy working out. The benefits are more than physical, and I damn well know I need the mental benefits too. It’s just another piece of the puzzle.

One of my biggest flaws is that I want things done now, which is going to make sticking to this difficult. I know I’m not going to reach my goal weight overnight, but it is going to be a long and frustrating process until I get there. However, I’m hoping that once I start seeing small changes, it’ll keep me on the straight and narrow, along with keeping my motivation up. The benefits of getting healthy are endless. Staying the way I was is the easy way unfortunately. But again, the benefits are endless. I can’t wait to start seeing them. They say it takes four weeks for you to notice a difference (AKA forever), eight weeks for your friends, and twelve weeks for the world. So I guess we’ll see.
